SAEE and Association “Ukrhydroenergo” discussed the importance and prospects of small hydropower plants in UkraineCreated date
13 07 2019The SAEE Head Sergiy Savchuk and the President of the Association "Ukrhydroenergo" Semen Potashnyk reviewed the state and prospects of hydropower development, including small hydropower plants.
In particular, they noticed that using potential of small rivers of Ukraine in compliance with all ecological norms promotes energy system decentralization and provides energy supply in remote rural areas.
According to the results of the study as for small hydropower potential, carried out by the World Bank, the Association "Ukrhydroenergo" is considering opportunities to implement a small hydropower pilot project in Lviv region.
The experience of implementing such a project is expected to be extended to other regions.
In general, according to the Association’s calculations, small hydropower capacity in Ukraine can be increased by 250 MW that will allow:
- to save more than 300 thousand tons of coal a year;
- to reduce CO2 and other emissions;
- to increase revenues to local budgets;
- to ensure socio-economic development of communities.
So they agreed to continue cooperation and work out the ways to implement and finance small hydropower projects, taking into account all environmental norms.
