Ukraine's positioning in the new global hydrogen economy must take into account, first of all, national interestsCreated date
28 05 2022It was stated by the Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency Valerii Bezus, opening a series of highly specialized discussions on hydrogen energy, organized together with the Energy Club.
"For Ukraine, the topic of hydrogen is very important, because it is a component not only for new technologies and carbon-free economy development, but also for energy security. After all, hydrogen is seen as the energy source of the future, which in some respects must substitute natural gas. And for Ukraine, this is a very important challenge on the one hand, and an opportunity on the other", Valerii Bezus explained.
At the same time, it is necessary to moderately analyze Ukraine's positioning in the new hydrogen economy.
"I am convinced that we should take care of Ukraine and structure the hydrogen economy and the country's place in it from a pragmatic point of view. First of all, given the resource base, but with a focus on national opportunities for hydrogen use", said the Chairman.
Therefore, there has been an active work on the developing hydrogen energy at the state level. This issue is under the control of the Minister of Energy. The draft Hydrogen Strategy has been developed within the framework of a working group set up on the basis of the Ministry of Energy and headed by Deputy Minister of Energy Yulia Pidkomorna.
At the same time, it is important to create a professional environment for further economic transformation. Intensive expert discussions will also contribute to this.
In particular, one of the first topics of discussion is the resource base for hydrogen production.
Green hydrogen is seen as the largest contributor to global decarbonization. Meanwhile, the world is also considering the possibility of producing hydrogen from nuclear power and natural gas with CO2 capture.
Representatives of Energoatom, Ukrhydroenergo, Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Institute of Technical Thermophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Chemical Technology Company LLC provided their views on hydrogen generation in Ukraine.
In particular, Oleksandr Ostapovets, Inspector General and Director on Security Issues of Energoatom, said that nuclear energy is a solution for producing large amounts of low-carbon hydrogen. Energoatom is considering several options for hydrogen production and is implementing a pilot project with French partners.
At the same time, Andriy Konechenkov, chairman of the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, assessed the prospects of "green" hydrogen that is of interest for Europe to import.
"Ukrhydroenergo, in turn, is exploring the possibility of producing "green" hydrogen using renewable potential of Ukrainian hydropower plants, taking into account world experience", said Andriy Lets, head of the project division at Ukrhydroenergo.
Scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine told about technological possibilities for hydrogen production and even a hydrogen hub creation.
Representatives of the Ukrainian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs announced the establishment of the Decarbonization Center, which will address, among other things, the issue of hydrogen technologies and projects.
In general, all participants agreed that hydrogen energy development is a necessary element of the post-war reconstruction of the country, which should take into account the principles of "green" economy.
