Kicked-off the UKRENERGY ERASMUS+ project
“The new educational project of the Erasmus+ UKRENERGY “Innovative Master Courses Supporting the Improvement of the Energy and Carbon Footprint of the Ukrainian Building Stock” will help to study specialists for the Ukraine's energy efficiency and decarbonization needs,” said Maria Malaya, the SAEE First Deputy Head during the UKRENERGY kick-off meeting aimed at promoting teaching and learning excellence in Ukraine by establishing innovative master courses on energy sustainability in buildings and carbon footprint reduction.
The kick-off meeting took place on April 17-23, 2023 in Genoa (Italy) and teamed up both European partners and representatives of Ukrainian HEIs that will participate in the project implementation.
"This educational project became possible thanks to the consolidation of the efforts of the SAEE, universities from Italy, Slovak Republic, Poland and Ukraine. We are especially grateful to European partners, who are ready to share their experience and jointly introduce master's courses in energy efficiency and decarbonization at Ukrainian universities," noted Mrs Malaya.
Ukraine recovery should be based on energy efficiency and sustainable development, therefore, the UKRENERGY project implementation is extremely important for the future recovery, the movement towards the EU, and Ukraine desire to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
During the kick-off meeting, the participants also discussed a further action plan to fulfill the project's objectives, including by deploying an innovative educational programme, co-designed with stakeholders, by establishing communication between universities and enterprises, and strengthening the leading role of higher education institutions in energy efficiency policy.

Study visit to the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava
As part of the UKRENERGY project, a representative of the SAEE took part in a study visit to the Slovak University of Technology on June 26-28, 2023. During the visit, the SAEE presented the UA Guidelines in the field of Energy Efficiency in Buildings and an overview of Ukrainian legislation in the field of energy efficiency, and the Slovak side shared the materials of the training course on energy efficiency in buildings: “Energy Audit of Buildings”, “Energy Certification of Buildings”, “Energy Retrofitting of Buildings”, “Nearly Zero Energy Buildings” and a case study on energy modernization of a house.
During the visit, a tour on the green roof of the Mlynské nivy shopping center in the downtown of Bratislava was conducted. The architectural solution combines an underground parking and a bus station, a shopping center (70 thousand m2), food courts and a green roof with a recreation area. The roof of the building has trees, a 550-meter-long jogging track, two training grounds, a barbecue area, benches and recreation areas with the ability to charge mobile devices via USB, a playground, a so-called “urban vegetable garden” and a mini solar power plant with a capacity of 96 kW.

SAEE is a key expert in the energy efficiency field of the UKRENERGY ERASMUS+ project
SAEE is actively working on the best European practices for energy sustainability in buildings. That is why Svitlana Pasichna, a representative of the SAEE, was honored to be a guest of two European educational projects RES4CITY (Horizon Europe) and SHERLOCK (Erasmus+ KA2 All-Inno), which brought together 18 partners from 8 European countries and Switzerland.
Indicators of specific energy consumption by buildings in Ukraine are 2-3 times higher than similar indicators in EU countries. The residential sector accounts for 33.2% of energy consumption and more than 40% of heat consumption and is the second largest energy consumer after the industrial sector (34%). Excessive energy consumption today indicates significant potential for reducing energy consumption in buildings, which can exceed 40%.
Besides, the war of the russian federation, characterized by widespread destruction of buildings, has resulted in a demand for reconstruction and renovation of the building stock, taking into account energy security and the need for maximum reduction in energy consumption, primarily through increased energy efficiency.
Thus, renovating buildings to make them more energy efficient is a key step towards the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. However, this process requires a skilled workforce capable of understanding and applying multidisciplinary dimensions during building modernization, covering technical, financial and social aspects, which will be taken into account during the development of master's courses to support the improvement of the energy and carbon footprint of the building stock of Ukraine within the UKRENERGY project jointly with Ukrainian, Italian, Polish and Slovak universities.
The UKRENERGY team is working on the development of Program Handbooks for Master's courses
The UKRENERGY project team continues its work on the development of Programme Handbooks tailored to the labor market and enable to support employability expectations of graduates. Our team prepares training materials by updated methodologies based on the best European practices.

Study visit to the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, Caserta, Italy
UKRENERGY team gathered together on 24th-29th March, 2024 at the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli in Caserta in order to get support in developing Deliverable 1.2, which consists in the preparation of the Programme Handbooks for the new Master Courses (for main universities) and creating modules to be integrated in their existing teaching disciplines (for affiliated universities).
Also, during study visit UKRENERGY team found out about an innovative educational and training tool, namely, with the Serious Games project, created by the RES4CITY project team.
Business Simulation Game (BSG) - this is an innovative and engaging educational and training tool that allows users to replicate the dynamics and logics of a specific business scenario. Users, individually or in a team, face a competitive situation in order to stimulate the application of their problem solving, creativity, strategic analysis and decision-making skills. The task is to lead a virtual company analysing data and making strategic decisions within the game, which have consequences on the outcome. These decisions involve areas such as marketing, finance, operations, sustainability and human resources.
