National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities has given the green light for biomethane supply to the gas transportation system of Ukraine

On August 2, 2022  the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities adopted the resolution "On Amendments to the Code of the Gas Transportation System and the Code of Gas Distribution Systems"  which regulates the issue of biomethane supply to the network.

Thus, the resolution provides for an increase in the molar fraction of oxygen content in natural gas from 0.02 mol. %:

- up to 0.2 mol. % for biomethane access to the gas transportation system;

- up to 1.0 mol. % for biomethane access to gas distribution systems.

Therefore, biomethane producers will be able to apply to GTS/GRS operators for technical conditions regarding the supply of biomethane to the network.

Also recently, on July 22, the Government of Ukraine approved the Procedure for the Biomethane Register Functioning developed by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine in compliance with Law of Ukraine No. 1820 adopted by the Parliament in October 2021.

Thus, at the state level, the efforts of all - the Parliament, the Government, the Ministry of Energy, the State Energy Efficiency Agency, the National Commission for State Regulation of Energy and Public Utilities - have been accumulated for biomethane market introduction in Ukraine.

The development of biomethane production is one of the ways to substitute gas usage and decarbonization, which Ukraine is actively pursuing together with the EU in the context of the global energy crisis and Russia's energy terror.
