Today, Ukraine should work on the future energy mix and energy sector recovery, taking into account energy security goals, decarbonization and European integration tasks. This was discussed at the opening of the 5-day forum "Energy Security Forum 2022", organized by the largest energy community "Energy Club" with the support of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE).
"We have to respond to energy challenges not only to confront russian terrorism, but also to counter russia's efforts to push us back both at the tactical and strategic levels," emphasized Valerii Bezus, Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE)., opening the forum.
"We must have a clear idea of what kind of energy balance can ensure sustainable development of Ukraine and promote energy transformation. A clear understanding of how distribution network systems should be developed to adapt to the necessary energy mix is required. All these issues need to be resolved as soon as possible," Valerii Bezus said.
In addition, in the process of energy sector recovery, Ukraine must adhere to its commitments on European integration and decarbonization. In this direction, more detailed plans are needed and active work on achievement of the set goals.
"The issue of technical policy and regulation requires special attention. This applies not only to the power industry, but also to the integration of renewable energy sources into the energy system, hydrogen technologies development, waste-to-energy production and other spheres," Valerii Bezus emphasized.
The problems of the energy sector, which has been suffering from Russian attacks for more than 250 days, and the ways of its recovery were also outlined by other participants in the discussion.
"It is necessary to develop a concept to develop a new energy system, using innovative technologies (smart networks, energy storage systems, heat pumps, hydrogen technologies, small modular reactors, etc). However, the priority should be the consumer", - said Yuriy Bondarenko, Vice President of the National Committee of the International Council on Large Electric Power Systems "CIGRE-Ukraine".
Konrad Swirski, President of Transition Technologies, Professor at Warsaw University of Technology emphasized on the importance of a comprehensive approach to the energy sector reconstruction, taking into account three stages: immediate repair of damage, as well as solving short- and long-term tasks after victory. Meeting energy demand during a rapid economic recovery may be a challenge. However, Konrad Swirski sees the possibility of assistance in the recovery of the Ukrainian energy sector from the side of Poland.
The importance of close international partnership was also confirmed by Matteo Governatori, International Relations Officer, Directorate-General for Energy, European Commission. Since the beginning of the war started by russia, the EU has provided support for the reconstruction of facilities and networks damaged or destroyed by the enemy. The European community sees Ukraine as a promising partner and plans to support reconstruction.
