Green Recovery of Ukraine: The Role of Women in Ukraine’s Energy Renewal
An important dialogue took place in the context of Ukraine’s green recovery, bringing together a delegation from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) — one of UNDP’s key donors in the energy sector — and leading women leaders of Ukraine’s energy sector.
The key theme of the meeting was the role of women in Ukraine’s energy recovery. Representatives of the energy sector discussed the issue of a workforce shortage, which has significantly worsened as a result of the full-scale war, and jointly explored possible ways to address it.
“It is extremely important to invest today in specialized knowledge and skills for women in the energy sector — as this is an investment in the country’s future resilience, security, and development.
On the one hand, applied competencies are needed in energy management, energy auditing, and the development and implementation of renewable energy projects. On the other hand, strategic knowledge and analytical skills are essential for women leaders who shape policies and make decisions that determine the energy resilience of communities and the state as a whole,” emphasized Anna Zamazeeva during the discussion.
Participants identified key priorities, discussed existing challenges, and outlined opportunities to accelerate Ukraine’s sustainable, inclusive, and green energy recovery.
The discussion was attended by representatives of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kyiv, Naftogaz of Ukraine’s gas supply company, Ukrnafta, NPC Ukrenergo, private energy companies, the journalism community, and energy sector experts.
The necessary thematic educational programs are already being implemented in Ukraine thanks to cooperation between the public sector and strong support from international partners. During the event, participants reaffirmed a shared position: these initiatives not only can but must be scaled up.
Engaging women in the energy sector means contributing to the country’s resilience. That is why it is important to continue developing expert communities, investing in education, and creating equal opportunities so that women continue to play an important role in Ukraine’s green recovery and energy modernization.
We are grateful to the organizers of today’s meeting — UNDP Ukraine — and to all participants of the luncheon held at the Serhiy Nyzhnyi School of Public Administration.
