At the beginning of 2025, Ukraine made a historic breakthrough in the field of renewable gases: for the first time, not only was industrial biomethane production established, but it was also successfully exported to European Union countries.
This step sends a powerful signal to European partners: Ukraine is ready to be a reliable and strategically important supplier of green gas to Europe, contributing to the strengthening of joint energy security and regional climate resilience.
During the conference “Biomethane in Ukraine: Opportunities and Development”, held in Kyiv last week, Olena Lenska, Head of the Department for Alternative Energy Development at the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE), emphasized:
“The start of Ukrainian biomethane exports is a clear signal to international partners: we are ready to be a reliable supplier of renewable gas for Europe! The next challenge for Ukraine is the recognition of Ukrainian guarantees of origin within the EU. Back in 2022, SAEE developed a procedure for maintaining the biomethane registry. In 2024–2025, we updated the document in line with digitalization requirements and European directives, and we are now in the process of creating the registry. In May this year, we presented the development status and key features of the registry. By the end of the year, we plan to launch it in pilot mode. At the same time, we are holding consultations on integrating the biomethane registry with the UDB,” stated Olena Lenska.
As a reminder, in May, SAEE presented the current state of the biomethane registry’s development at the roundtable “Digital Registries — The Foundation of a Transparent Renewable Energy Market.” The event was attended by government officials, international partners, and business representatives. During the event, the current functionality of the biomethane registry was demonstrated. The registry was presented by Volodymyr Korotkov, Deputy Head of SAEE for Digital Development, Digital Transformation, and Digitalization.
The biomethane registry is a key element in forming a transparent, reliable, and integrated system for accounting and monitoring the production and consumption of biomethane in Ukraine. This tool will allow producers to obtain guarantees of origin for their products and give consumers confidence in their sustainability, quality, and compliance with international standards.
Conference participants also presented real-life examples of operational biomethane production facilities in Ukraine. These cases provided compelling evidence that biomethane projects in Ukraine have moved beyond the theoretical stage — they are successfully operating, generating profit, and becoming part of the European energy market.
Particular attention was given to the challenges facing producers, developers, and regulators, as well as to the potential of biomethane as a crucial element of energy security for both Ukraine and the European Union.
The Ukrainian biomethane market is rapidly transitioning from the potential phase to the implementation phase. This opens new opportunities for investment, technological advancement, and international cooperation. We are confident that the development of biomethane is a tangible step toward energy independence for Ukraine and Europe.
