The State Agency on Energy Efficiency, together with the Decarbonization Fund of Ukraine, has implemented another state financial support program: 40,000 smart modules for gas meters have been procured
Using funds from the State Decarbonization and Energy Efficiency Transformation Fund of Ukraine, 40,000 Ukrainian-made smart modules have been purchased and transferred free of charge to Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine.
The Head of the State Agency on Energy Efficiency noted that the smart modules are installed on standard gas meters, expanding their functionality through wireless data transmission and integration with modern digital metering systems.
“This solution is a fast and cost-effective way to scale up the implementation of modern gas metering. It enables remote data transmission and integration into digital platforms, ensuring transparency and convenience for consumers,” emphasized Hanna Zamazieieva.
The introduction of smart modules in Ukraine is a step toward implementing European approaches to energy efficiency and fulfilling international obligations.
According to Directive 2012/27/EU on energy efficiency, Member States must ensure the implementation of intelligent metering systems that provide consumers with accurate data and tools for effective energy management, including gas consumption.
In particular, according to estimates by the European Commission, Ukraine is expected to report progress in implementing the Directive’s provisions as early as 2027.
That is why equipping existing meters with smart modules is a solution that allows a rapid transition to intelligent metering without the need for full replacement of devices. This approach is economically viable and less resource-intensive.
Advantages of implementing smart modules:
- Gas consumption data is transmitted remotely in automatic mode without the need for manual input.
- Consumers can track their consumption at any time via digital services or mobile applications.
- The system enables prompt detection of unusual changes in consumption and response to potential risks.
- Billing is based on actual data, reducing the risk of errors and increasing consumer trust.
- Access to detailed data over different periods allows better control of gas usage and expense planning.
Taking into account regional needs, the equipment is being distributed to three regional branches of Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine LLC: Volyn branch — 3,380 devices; Kyiv branch — 23,965; Mykolaiv branch — 12,655. After receiving the equipment, the branches will ensure the phased installation of smart modules in households and public institutions.
We are grateful to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for supporting decisions that contribute to improving service quality, transparency of metering, and the rational use of energy resources.
